Stephen Dean

Date of birth : 1968

Country : france

Artist.

Born from an American father and a French mother, Dean studied art in Paris and Los Angeles before settling in New York to work. The material Stephen Dean uses in his work is something that already exists, like a flag that he cuts up and reassembles, or crossword puzzles that he colours in, giving them a visual regularity and another way of viewing them. The same technique is also applied to plaid fabric, some of the squares he covers with a paint, doubling the chromatic contrast with a contrast of material.

Equation is one such example. The medium he uses is an object like a Chinese abacus, but the rings are repainted in bold colours. The strictly mathematical function has been altered, but still shows a multitude of combinations made possible by the artist.
