Piotr Strelnik

Date of birth : 1956

Country : Poland

Painter.

After studying at the Fine Arts School in Warsaw, in 1983 Strelnik came to Paris. He defined himself as a figurative painter. However, he abandoned direct and explicit representations of characters in his paintings. Part of his inspiration is to be found in the memories of the coal mines and slag heaps in his home country.

In this diptych the obelisks show the Strelnik's attraction for monumental sculpture. The two oblong forms face each other in perfect symmetry, one being the mirror of the other. They are like sketches in preparation for a sculpture, studies of form, material, and visualisation of lighting. The obelisks are supple and curved, which, according to the artist, are similar to two bodies bending towards each other, escaping their role as a mere object.
