From 1956, Benrath became the most famous of the Nuagiste (Cloudist) group, and painted large, dark and horizontal surfaces bathed in light. Finally, he gave up apply paint in a controlled manner, and instead allowed the paint, as here in Mes Archipels (My Archipelagos), to spread slowly across the canvas, a technique he called the “flowing change of the picture".
