Acrylic on mirror
During the 1970s, Bertrand Lavier created photographic works, and later repainted objects in view of creating a painting. Examples include a piano, a window, a refrigerator, and a mirror, covered in a thick layer of paint of the same colour as the original object.
He also posed semantic questions: The definition of a work is expressed in French, translated into English then Japanese and Arabic. The result varies greatly depending on the codes and representations of reality in each language.
Since 1984, he has also been making sculptures set on a base like a refrigerator set on an armchair or a safe. The objects become a work of art by destination.
