Photography is a crucial tool for Idir
Davaine: he frequently takes snapshots of his daily surroundings to reference
them later in his acrylic paintings. Focusing on the line, the shape, and the
colour, he breaks up and rearranges elements from mountains, forests, and nature
to create abstract coloured scenes.
In Confectionner une guirlande 5,
sections of bright colours sketch a purposely opaque scene. Thus symbols and
signs appear like successive strata. Overlaid, they’re inspired by multiple
sources: geology, cosmology, fairy tales, the plant kingdom, ornamentation, and
the history of painting itself…
