In 2012, the Louvre invited Jean-Baptiste Huynh to exhibit a new series of photographs inspired by the museum's collections. The photograph here is a portrait from this series. The use of the black backdrop removes the subject from any context and alludes to the cosmos - a dimension of particular interest to Jean-Baptiste Huynh. In this portrait of a black woman, besides the formal beauty and the use of light, this backdrop makes the portrait almost an abstract work and adds a dimension of universality to the person photographed. The portrait of a Somalian woman taken in Kenya in 2012 was inspired by the painting by Marie-Guillemine Benoist.
