Founded in Chicago in 1918 by Fenton Johnson, one of the city’s wealthiest African Americans, The Favorite Magazine claimed to be the "first and only weekly magazine published by and for colored people”. It was stopped 1920. A reference to the Statue of Liberty, in one hand the artist holds a Baoule statue (from the Ivory Coast) and in the other, what could be a copy of Notebook of a Return to the Native Land by Aimé Césaire.
