Coffres-forts (Safes) Series
Black and white photograph, argentique.
Found at a scrap metal merchant’s, the safes in this series were photographed in situ yet in studio conditions. Designed to be impenetrable, they are shown, as here, in an axonometric projection. The volume of
the object is consequently compressed to highlight its geometry, as in a drawing. The emphasis placed on its graphic outlines shifts its depiction towards a ghostly image. In this series, to avoid an anecdotal approach to form and cut straight through to the heart of things, Valérie Belin focuses her attention on transparent or reflective glass objects like this mirror. What is shown is not the object but its envelope.
