David Hockney

1937

Great Britain

Born in 1937 in Bradford, United Kingdom, David Hockney is a portrait and landscape painter, a cartoonist, an engraver, a decorator, a photographer, and a theoretician of British art.

He studied at the Royal College of Art in London, where he met Allen Jones and Patrick Caulfield before graduating in 1962. He then started a career as a painter and made a first trip to Egypt as a newspaper cartoonist for the Sunday Times. In 1974, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris organised the first retrospective of his work. In 1999, the Centre Georges Pompidou held a retrospective of his work on landscapes entitled “SPACE/LANDSCAPE.” It showed the questions asked and the answers given by David Hockney regarding the representation of landscapes using other methods than linear perspective since the 1960s.
After spending ten years in England, David Hockney came back in 2014 in California to settled down in Los Angeles where he lives and works since then.

More recently, in 2017, the Centre Pompidou held yet another retrospective retracing his lifetime’s work.
