In bright, solid planes of acrylics onplywood, Ymane Chabi-Gara’s paintings display characters, alone or in small groups,in worlds and situations mirroring their interiority. Domestic spaces andindustrial wastelands support the narration, and the body is a merging pointwhere all experiences end up and find meaning. Lately, she has beenrepresenting herself on the canvases. “This staging of myself relates with thesingularity of intimacy and loneliness as an archaic, universal feeling,” sheexplains. The “Hikikomori” series evokes the Japanese youth that makes theradical choice to cut itself off society for a while. Using documentary imagesas references, the artist paints herself in their environments, bedrooms packedwith things – books, video games, rubbish – like fortresses...
Born in 1986 in Paris, France.
A graduate from the ENSAV La Cambre in Brussels, Ymane Chabi-Gara discovered her passion for painting at the beginning of her studies. After a few years of travelling and several exhibitions, she entered the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2016, then left for Tokyo in 2018 to be an exchange student at the Musashino Art University for six months. There, she deepened her understanding of contemporary Japanese society and found the inspiration for her works, notably her “Hikikomori” series, which was exhibited at Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles (Labo_demo #2) and in the window of the Galerie Zlotowski in Paris in 2020. She graduated from the Beaux-Arts de Paris in October 2020, supported by her two supervisors: painter Marc Desgranchamps and visual artist Joann Sfar.
